The original after-hours party monster Trade returns with an almighty party next month, once again re-writing the clubbing rulebook by throwing a Saturday afternoon session across four rooms, each with a distinct sound policy.
This week, Nick Tcherniak representing ‘Trade Modern’ and Guy Williams in the ‘Trade Lite’ rooms…
NICK TCHERNIAK: TRADE MODERN – TRADE AUTUMN
Why are you so excited about Trade hosting their forthcoming birthday at Egg London?
Because Egg London is without a doubt currently one of the best clubbing spaces in the capital, and to boot it’s the Trade creator’s own venue so very fitting. I can’t wait for people to see the changes, it looks the business!
Who was the first DJ you heard at Trade that made you think, “Wow this club is something else!”
Tony de Vit was the first I heard who was just awesome, but all the residents, really. I was always into house and tech of the more edgier variety from listening to Kiss FM even before I’d stepped inside a club. When I finally made it to Trade, it all made sense! I’d play the Trade albums constantly and became a true disciple. The music affected me to such a degree that I felt as though I had to be a part of it and changed career completely. It is without a doubt the reason I am doing what I am doing now.
If you could revisit and re-live a certain night at Trade, which one would it be and for which reasons?
Probably my first night there in ‘95. I think it was a bank holiday weekend. All the rooms were open and I just couldn’t believe the musical – and visual in more ways than one – feast. I wondered round from room to room like a kid in a candy store until it was time to go home. I was staying with my parents at the time who were sitting down to Sunday lunch with the entire family. When they asked me what I’d been up to, I decided to share the experience, perhaps a little too honest as the reaction could have been a little more positive, so maybe on a revisit I’d skip the lunch bit!
Sum up Trade in three words…
Decadent, infectious Musica!
GUY WILLIAMS: TRADE LITE – TRADE SUMMER
What did Trade mean to you at the beginning and what does it mean to you now?
I went to Trade a few times in the mid-Nineties when I still lived in Manchester and loved its underground naughty atmosphere. Then Lawrence asked me to play soon after I moved to London in early 1998, and after the first gig I became monthly resident and have always loved playing there. It generates an excitement – still – in a loyal passionate and evolving crowd that lends itself to an amazing atmosphere. It means a lot to still be part of it fifteen years after first playing
How would you describe you your most incredible night as a clubber at Trade?
There were a few visits before I became resident and they were all as good as each other!
Why do you think Trade has stood the test of time in the fickle world of clubland?
It was always about the music, the programming, the vibe and great crowd so that people who went were like a family and always knew it was going to be worth it
Sum up Trade in 3 words…
Roof comes off!
Nick Tcherniak’s Top 3 Trade anthems of all time
Diddy – ‘Give Me Love’ (Tony de Vit Remix)
Encapsulating what Tony did best, more energy than a power plant then a dark turn after the break that took no prisoners.
Bush Babies – ‘Delicious’
A pounding Trade Anthem if ever there was one. Hip-shaking percussion, hooky synth line and a “gotta find me a man” vocal sample.
99th Floor Elevators – ‘Hooked’ (Pete Wardman Remix)
Goosebumps listening to the breakdown in this even now. I can just visualise those lasers!
• Trade is at Egg London (200 York Way, Kings Cross, N7 9AX) on Saturday afternoon 2nd November, midday-midnight… and maybe later!
