Beast of the East, Dalston Superstore, presents Nancy’s – its new Friday night of disco, pop, house and party bumps featuring a cast of familiar fabulous residents. QX’s clubbing ears were pricked and we wanted to find out more! We spoke to three of their most stellar beat-spinners about what they’ve got lined-up for the loyal crowds that flock to the ‘Store each weekend, and what it means to be a resident on the gay scene in London today…

HIFI SEAN

Where was your best residency on the London gay scene?

My fave was RAW which started at 4am on a Monday morning. It was deep, deep, deep, just dark red lights and four hundred people swaying to the minimal beats and getting lost in it, and then they are let out to the bright light chaos of  Monday morning rush hour traffic… Some bizarre!

Why do you think DJ residencies make a real difference to a club night?

You get used to your crowd, make new friends, create tunes that become faves of that party and basically create a little musical family around you.

What is Nancy’s all about?

Good music, cool people, no attitude, love of music and a wink of the eye.

And what can we expect from your upcoming residency at Nancy’s?

I am going to mix it up, with old school house meets nu school house meets disco meets funk meets northern soul.

MIKKI MOST

Where was your best residency on the London gay scene?

My best residency was Trailer Trash, which ran every Friday for 5 years and each week was bloody mental! Johnny Woo getting the whole club to lie down on the floor one week was a highlight.

Why do you think DJ residencies make a real difference to a club?

Having resident DJs who get to know the crowd every week are what makes nights really special. There are so many well-documented residencies that have now become the stuff of legends… I guess it allows those DJs much more freedom and it’s not just about playing hits all night. When you are playing at the same club every week, you can start to build more of a relationship with a crowd and become more experimental in your selection, which is where things get interesting.

What is Nancy’s all about?

A bunch of great local DJs playing together in a Friday night homo hangout … It’s like the gay version of Cheers where everybody knows yer name.

Tell us your funniest memory of the Dalston Superstore?

Ah there are loads… A Man To Pet and John Sizzle showering on top of the infamous ‘Superstore bar was pretty special!

And what can we expect from your upcoming residency at Nancy’s?

Snake charming music to make your body pop.

JEFFREY HINTON

Where was your best residency on the London gay scene?

I’ve been around trannies, prostitutes and outcasts all my life so as long as there’s a mix of that, it’s a good club for me.

Why do you think DJ residencies make a real difference to a club?

You get a core crowd, simple!

What is Nancy’s all about?

A welcoming party with a tinge of chaos!

And what can we expect from your upcoming residency at Nancy’s?

ME!
