The DWV shows have been a highly anticipated affair amongst the London fans for quite some time now. And last week the waiting finally came to an end as they took to the stage of Camden’s iconic cabaret spot, The Black Cap, for three exclusive shows at the venue’s Meth Lab night. Jason Reid reports…

The American drag supergroup, made up of William Belli (RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 4), Vicky Vox and Detox Icunt (RuPaul’s Drag Race Season Five) shot to fame after the release of ‘Chow Down (at Chick-fil-A)’ – a parody of the Wilson Philips hit ‘Hold On’. After their initial success, the only way was up it seemed, and their ‘Boy is a Bottom’ video parody went viral worldwide and was a regular feature on social media sites, hitting the Billboard US Comedy charts at number six – and to date it has been viewed over 12.5 million times. These gals are the rock stars of the drag world right now!

We minced along on the opening night to check it all out and were greeted by a packed out Black Cap (tickets sold out pretty fast) and a charismatic and fierce welcome from Joey A. Frenette – who was sporting the most awesome replica Cher newspaper wig, from the ‘Woman’s World’ video. Stunning! The night began with some sickening warm up spots from host Meth, and her Familyyy Fierce Collective:  Miss Cairo, Ruby Jones, Lily Snatchdragon and Joe Black.

“These gals are the rock stars of the drag world right now!”

The main event was preceded with a wave of supportive caterwauling that reverberated around the room with the announcement of DWV’s imminent arrival, and the hollering and whooping carried on in that vein all night. The girls, looking top to toe flawless, toyed and cajoled the audience into a frenzy. A frenzy that was reminiscent of a wide-eyed, cult-like following. A well dressed one. No socks and sandals or comfortable slacks here. They gave the fans exactly what they wanted: their three biggest hits to date, plus a solo number from all three. ‘Blurred Bynes’ seemed to be a real favourite with the crowd. However, as the first few bars of ‘Boy is a Bottom’ started, the room just erupted like a super-volcano. Quite an experience.

For a venue that has been through a fair bit of turmoil in recent times we could feel something very special was being reborn. A sick old gal has kicked off the crutches and got the full bill of health she’d been so waiting for, and a new chapter has begun for The Black Cap. We couldn’t be more pleased for them. Keep your eyes peeled for more appearances from RuPaul’s Drag Race stars at The Meth Lab throughout the year.
