On a lazy Sunday afternoon what’s better than pottering along to your local and watch yourself a little gay theatre?
This Sunday I indulged; head sore from Halloween, I headed to the King’s Head Pub in Angel (as an Angelite it’s not much of a trek) grabbed myself a Bloody Mary and headed into the intimate theatre at the rear of the pub. It’s surprisingly busy for a 2:30pm showing, with many audience members wiggling in their seats in excitement at the idea of seeing Pat Cash’s latest masterpiece.
He’s already made a name for himself as the writer of the sold out show ‘The Clinic’ – based on the Dean Street clinic. He’s also a renowned columnist for numerous gay publications. Oh, and he’s handsome too.
This experience is instantly apparent in the show. A show which “tells the stories of a brilliant but sometimes fractured LGBT community”. Expect “drag queens, ravers, closet cases, trans hearts, old fairies and vegan lesbians.” Pat’s ability to give voice to the gay community, exploring our quirks and our stories, and putting in on stage for the masses, is brilliant.
The show, less than an hour long, is a collection of stories by an array of colourful characters. I felt myself mesmerised as I sat in the dark. Cash takes us on a journey of familiar haunts, from Soho and Dalston to Vauxhall. Many of the issues and characters are so true to life that the show can be uncomfortable at times.
The acting is superb. Zachariah Fletcher is a blast as drag queen Patricia Primarché, and Sean Hart is the heart throb of the piece as ‘straight’ boy Larry the Laydeez’ Lothario. A must see – perfect little treat for a lazy Sunday afternoon – you can even take your mum (though I wouldn’t). Congratulations Mr Cash.
• Queers runs until 22nd November at the King’s Head Theatre, 115 Upper Street, Islington, N1. Tickets are £12 (£10 with concessions). www.kingsheadtheatre.com.
