Debbie is four years old! She’s having one totally awesome party and we asked Debbie’s dynamo promoters Sina Sparrow and Bitchcakes to give us the skinny on it all.
“We’ve been doing Debbie for four years as of this month… It’s kind of unbelievable! We both really love female fronted music, girl groups and women singers, from the past and the present, and all different kinds of music, so that’s why we started Debbie.
We wanted to create a club where different kinds of queer people – different genders, different ages, nationalities, whatever – could come and where there was a genuinely fun, friendly, unpretentious atmosphere.
One thing we’ve thought about – for the future – is maybe taking Debbie to the seaside for a day, and having a party somewhere on the coast where we could show Debbie off to the rest of the world!
But we’ve never had a massive plan for Debbie, and we didn’t necessarily think when we started it that we’d be doing it the way we’re doing it now! We’re really grateful and happy that people like our taste in music and enjoy coming and dancing every month.”
“The birthday party this year is a celebration of blondes – since the party itself is named after Debbie Harry, the lead singer of Blondie – so we’re going to be playing music by any kind of blonde female pop star – bleached or natural, wig or weave, if they’ve had blonde hair, they’re fair play! And it would be fabulous if you could come along wearing a blonde wig – but definitely not obligatory!”
So there you go, get yourself down to Paks, bag a platinum weave and help Debbie celebrate as she reaches the grand old age of four this weekend!
• Debbie’s 4th Birthday is on Saturday April 16th at the Shacklewell Arms (71 Shacklewell Lane, E8 2EB) from 11pm – 3am. £5 entry, blonde wigs optional.
