Since launching in 2001, Bootylicious has been a safe and vibrant space to come party for over two decades. Thomas, promoter of Bootylicious, outlines the founding principles behind this fabulous club night:
Pictures really do tell a story and the pictures taken at Bootylicious last month tell that story better than this article can. Bootylicious has always been known for attracting an audience who might feel bored or uninspired by the usual fare you get at most gay venues. No offence. Let me explain.
When people talk about diversity these days they usually mean some kind of equality where everyone gets a fair shake and nobody gets treated differently from the next person. Talk to anyone black or brown and LGBTQ+ though, and they will tell you more often than not that this is not their personal experience on the gay scene.
Bootylicious was founded to address this by deliberately choosing a path where music was underground and really quite specific to people of afro-Caribbean origin and young people who were growing up in places like Brixton or Hackney. It was also a place for people from other walks of life who had found their way to these particular music styles because they found them fresh and exciting and funny and sexual and outrageous.
These pictures tell of real, unfiltered LGBTQ people who are easy with each other and themselves. Gay male sex gods happily mix with girls twerking, people showing their pleasure with a smile, and gender fluidity as part and parcel of always being highly individual and ready to pose, whatever angle you catch them at.
Recently people are getting into New York style House music inspired by the Vogue scene that’s thriving all over Europe and the US. So the club employs some expert DJs to mix and blend over 2 dance floors. Every lover of RnB Hiphop, Dancehall, Afrobeat, Trap, Amapiano and Disco, House + UK Garage classics will be hearing their music during the night. Pure vibes and good energy from start to finish.
