Welcome Home: A world premiere sci-fi epic that takes on the church to avenge a lifetime of queer shame By Willy Hudson at Soho Theatre, 25 January – 11 February 2023
Writer and performer Willy Hudson returns to Soho Theatre with a new show, facing the battle between religion and homosexuality told through the lens of science fiction. Recovering from a bad breakup, Willy moves back to his parent’s house in this autobiographical story but waiting there is the thing controlling him since birth – his childhood church.
Welcome Home is a story about resolving anger, the importance of allies and knowing when to let go.
There are space battles, monster anthems and an extraterrestrial terrain, all revolving around a real-world struggle of the heart.
Willy Hudson told QX, “I am excited to bring my next show to the iconic Soho Theatre. I’ve written Welcome Home as a queer genesis, a story of biblical proportions to try and heal shame. I wanted to make something fun, epic and silly out of my biggest pain. And, above all, I wanted to make a good night out.”
This is a queer, neurodivergent and working-class performance company. Led by artist Willy Hudson and producer Daisy Hale, their work combines theatre and comic storytelling to centre queer narratives in a mainstream cultural context to challenge queer stereotypes engagingly and inclusively.
The company makes genre-bending shows that use queerness to unpick taboos. The work is both fun and entertaining and unashamedly silly and serious at the same time. It’s a good night out conceived to attract new audiences, especially LGBTQ+ audiences. The theatre offers a creative space to express, find confidence in, and document our experiences.
