Award-winning charity, Girls Rock London, has responded to the gender imbalance in music with a new album and musical showcase celebrating women, trans and non-binary musicians. The will showcase the music at Signature Brew Haggerston this Saturday, 25 February.
Girls Rock London announces their GRL album and musical showcase celebrating women, trans and non-binary musicians at Signature Brew in Haggerston on Saturday, 25 February, from 7 pm – 11.30 pm.
Girls Rock London (GRL) is an award-winning charity based in Hackney that provides high-quality music programming for women and girls (cis and trans), non-binary people, trans men/boys, and people with other marginalised gendered experiences, with a specific focus on increasing access for people who face barriers to participation.
Responding directly to the gender imbalance in music, GRL designed a 6-month programme for early-stage musicians to take the next steps towards musical independence. This sought to develop participants’ songwriting, production, performance and recording skills, build confidence, and grow their networks.
The culmination of this project has resulted in an album which will be released through Bandcamp, followed by a digital release on Spotify later this year. The musicians will also perform their new music at a showcase at Signature Brew in Haggerston on Saturday, 25 February.
The album features new bands Full Pelt, Hypersonic Owls, The D@W$, Cascade, The Confusion Dilemma, WITCH FARM and Creatrix Twins, and all the songs featured on the album were written and performed by the artists in a range of different genres.
The programme was led by women, trans and non-binary musicians, educators and producers using trauma-informed principles. It was delivered online and in person through workshops, mentoring sessions and studio recording sessions.
Participants wrote their tracks either in the rehearsal room or remotely through their Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). The incredible team from Omni Collective mixed and mastered them to bring you this inspiring collection of songs.
GRL programmes are aimed at complete beginners as well as experienced musicians, working closely with community partners to respond to the needs of people experiencing multiple and intersecting disadvantages.
