24/08/14: As one of my closest friends always says to me “They all come out on Bank Holidays, dear. It’s the perfect time to scoop up a bit of trade”.

Well the former was definitely true of my visit to The City of Quebec last Sunday. It seemed like all of Marble Arch’s finest were out in force, from cute lads to the more mature and discerning gentleman. Oh, and can I just mention the bar staff at this juncture: good looking, friendly with absolutely no attitude. So refreshing. I was moist in areas I never knew could get moist.

Topsie Redfern was on hand providing the entertainment, looking splendiferous in a red gown with a very understated back bow. She sang her way (and boy can she sing) through some of musical theatre’s greatest numbers, including Phantom Of the Opera, Little Shop of Horrors and Les Miserables, all done with a beautiful beaming smile and plenty of crowd interaction. I swear she just loves being manhandled that one.

Despite battling recurring sound issues she sailed through her set like a true pro, thinking on her heels by injecting games, vocal training, serenading an audience member (who was curiously called Mustafa Wasabi) and coaching her Quebec choir, before finishing on an energetic medley of what we used to call in the 90s ‘handbag tunes’. How can you not love a bit of Steps and The Time Warp? “It’s just a stagger to the left…”

A thoroughly enjoyable night, in one of London’s friendliest gay pubs. Sometimes you just want a nice pint, in a relaxing atmosphere with some top quality cabaret. Oh and Topsie is still, inexplicably, single and looking for love. Why haven’t any of you lot snapped her up? She’s one of the nicest queens around. GET ON IT, BITCHES! Maybe QX should set her up on a few dates…

Topsie’s Dream Drag Dinner Party

Five guests she’d invite to the mother of all dinner parties…

  • Lady Imelda – I love her, she’s totally hilarious! And she could do all the washing up and cleaning afterwards.
  • Bette Rinse – Again someone who’s hugely entertaining, and she’s into her political and topical debate, so she’d keep the conversation lively.
  • Vanity von Glow – Live music and show tunes would be provided by her on the piano. And she looooooves a party.
  • Lady La Rue – I used to live with Lady La Rue and she’s a dear friend, one who is also a dab hand with microwave meals.
  • Jasmine – Yes Jason, YOUR drag alter ego! I’ve never met her and I bet she’s a right goer after a few sherries.
